We have two types of hire bike available:
Simple 6 speed town bikes (long term hire)
These are fitted with a rear basket (two sizes of men’s and two sizes of women’s bikes available). These are ideal for running around between the colleges and University buildings, exploring the back-streets of Oxford and riding along the river tow-path. Available for between 4 weeks or term (10 weeks). (If you are going to be in Oxford for less than a year it may well be cheaper and less hassle to take out a bike on a long-term hire than to buy a bike together with a lock, lights, basket, etc.)
Lightweight alloy hybrid bikes (short term hire)
These are fitted with mudguards and rear pannier carrier. They are ideal for longer day rides and taking on a few hills – we can suggest routes for longer cycle rides around Oxford.Buy
Buy Back scheme If you are looking for a bike for longer than our hire terms, we offer up to 50% buy back on certain models if returned within 12 months. Give us a call for more information.
- Simple 6 speed town bike (long term hire) – 4 weeks £40; Term hire (10 weeks) £60 (extra weeks @ £6/week); Deposit £100
- Lightweight alloy hybrid bikes (short term hire) – 1 day £18 (extra days @ £6/day); 1 week £35 (extra weeks @ £18/week); Deposit: £100
The hire charge includes the loan of a good solid lock (and detachable lights if required). It is very unusual for hire bikes to be stolen, as long as they are secured to a solid object with the lock that we supply! We usually have supplies of the Oxford Cycle Map produced by Oxfordshire County Council (free of charge if we have them). We do not lend out or hire cycle helmets. (We do have them available for sale)
General Advice and ‘Rules of the Road’
Please note that the convention in the UK is for the front brake to be operated by the right hand brake lever.
When leaving the bike around the city, care should be taken to secure the frame of the bike to a solid object (such as a steel bike stand or railings) with the lock provided. If this is done properly it is unlikely that your bike will be stolen.
Cycling at night
If you are using the bike at night (after lighting up time) you must have lights fixed to the front and rear of the bike. These will be provided by the shop on request at no extra charge (although you may have to pay for new batteries if they get used up during the hire period)
Use cycle lanes where they are available, but take care because they are not continuous for the full length of many roads into Oxford. Cyclists should not, generally use the pavements, unless there are signs to the contrary.
Cycling in traffic
If you do not feel confident cycling in traffic, there are several alternative cycle routes around the city, through parks and by the river. Please ask for more details. We often have maps available.
If you plan a longer cycle ride out of the city, it is a good idea to take a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit and a few tools, as we do not have a “breakdown service” to come and rescue you if you get a puncture. A repair kit with the essential tools etc. can be hired for a couple of pounds.
